Earning an ESL licensure (ESL #1395) prepares you to serve English language learners (ELLs) by helping them become proficient in academic English. Build their confidence and understanding in the English language and its rules for improved communication in and outside of school.

Learn how to give your ESL students the tools and strategies to do their school work, socialize, and grow as individuals. You will be introduced to the latest techniques for Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) in public and private schools. You will be trained in how to connect and communicate with different cultures and their communities.

Program Options (Licensure and/or Master's degree)

The ESL Program is an accelerated graduate-level program that has two options for individuals looking to become licensed as ESL teachers. Eligible students need to have their bachelor's in education AND their initial teacher licensure.

Licensure Only Option > 18 credits
        Master's of Education + Licensure Option > 36 credits

If you desire licensure outside of Wisconsin, contact your state department of education for details about whether or not this coursework will meet your state's requirements. Students from outside of Wisconsin may earn the Master’s degree without teacher licensing.
