Program Overview

The MPD Chemical program will provide the additional education and hands-on training that science majors need to secure jobs in the pharmaceutical or chemical product development industries; accordingly classes are taught in an applied manner.

You’ll apprentice with industry partners and learn in state-of-the-art analytical and pilot-scale labs (like the new hybrid classroom/cGMP lab on the Innovation Campus). In addition, you’ll be able to take advantage of networking and collaboration opportunities provided by the Interprofessional Education (IPE) program.

What to Expect

This two year program admits students with any science degree, but requires them to have taken at least two semesters of organic chemistry, one of analytical chemistry and one of instrumental analysis. Students typically take 24 credits per year (12 per semester), for a total of 48 credits to graduate.

Students also write, present and defend a Product Development Project based on work done over the two year period, on a chemical or pharmaceutical product development problem. This project is co-mentored by one CUW faculty member and an industry mentor who is actively involved in chemical or pharmaceutical product development. Typically our students will also have internships or jobs in the pharmaceutical or chemical industries if available.

You’ll learn a lot in this program from conceptualization and design to development and marketing. Professionally, you’ll be prepared to fill an unmet need in the industry. That is, after all, what launching a new product is all about.

State-of-the-Art Laboratories

You’ll have the opportunity to work in analytical, pilot-scale manufacturing, and compounding labs (multiple HPLC’s, a triple quadruple mass spectrometer, 2L jacketed reactor, 500 MHz NMR, Biotage Isolera for flash chromatography, and Biotage microwave reactor).
